Signal Mountain Social Services Scholarship

Academic Year 2017-18

  4. If an application question does not apply to you, write “not applicable” in the space provided; all boxes must be completed


Open to traditional and non-traditional students, Signal Mountain Social Services awards scholarships on the basis of a comprehensive process.  Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, color, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.  Applicants must meet the criteria listed below for consideration.

  • Applicants must be a permanent residence in zip code 37377, Hamilton County, Tennessee.
  • Applicants must be completing or have completed high school successfully or received a GED,
  • Applicants must be accepted at an accredited college, university, or trade/technical school program for the academic semester they are requesting a scholarship for.
  • Scholarships are not awarded for graduate school or other advanced degrees.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
  • If eligible, student must apply for the Federal Student Aid Application (FAFSA).
  • Applicants must complete and submit a Scholarship Application and all supporting documents by application due date.
  • If a scholarship is awarded for two semesters in the academic year,  funds for the second semester will be awarded onlyafter grades from the previous semester have been received and volunteer hours are completed for the upcoming semester.
  • Incomplete applications will be returned and not considered for the scholarship. Students submitting incomplete applications can reapply during the next scholarship cycle.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE is based on financial need, past and present academic performance, potential for financial self-reliance, references, and funding availability of the program.  Scholarship funds are paid directly to the recipient’s school upon completion of the Scholarship Acceptance Agreement.


  • New applications are due to SMSS by the scholarship cycle deadline. For example, students seeking scholarships for fall semester, must apply by May 15 at 5:00 PM.
  • Candidates selected for interviews will be notified by the SMSS Scholarship Committee within 3 weeks of the application deadline.
  • If awarded a scholarship, applicants will be notified within two weeks after their interview.
  • Scholarship recipients will be provided with a Scholarship Acceptance Agreement outlining the terms of the scholarship award.


  • Scholarships will be considered for renewal annually if the recipient maintains a 2.5 average GPA, satisfies the terms of their prior scholarship agreement, submits a renewal application by the appropriate deadline and is making progress towards completing their degree or training program.
  • The scholarship recipient must have a demonstrated need for continued financial assistance.
  • Current scholarship recipients who are seeking a renewal scholarship can re-apply on their scholarship anniversary by the corresponding application deadline.
  • In addition to the application, renewal applicants need to provide a personal statement describing their experience during their academic year, including what they have learned that will help them move forward in life.
  • The Scholarship recipient must retain permanent residence status in the 37377 zip code, Hamilton County, Signal Mountain, Tennessee.
  • Students must provide a transcript for consideration. Students may provide a transcript printed from an online college record through the prior semester or an official transcript. Awards will be made provisionally pending receipt of final grades from previous semester of that year.
